What is TMS?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive treatment in which magnetic pulses awaken under active parts of the brain. Researchers believe the brains in people with depression have less activity in the neurotransmitters and receptors than in people without depression.
Studies show that 10 to 20 percent of the people given TMS during studies had increased activity in those areas of the brains.
What Conditions Does TMS Treat?
TMS is for patients that have’t had success with different depression therapies or do nottolerate the side effects of antidepressants.Along with being FDA-approved for depres-sion, TranscranialMagnetic Stimulation isalso for:
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Chronic Pain
How is the Treatment Given?
TMS treatment involves wearing a skullcap with an electromagnetic coil embedded in it. It’s worn against the scalpneat the forehead to help stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brainwhen treating depression.
